EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
|
Sport & Exercise
Science Workshop
This workshop is a full day of practical sessions and lectures,
looking at effects of stress, health & fitness measurement,
body composition assessment, resistance training (gym session),
the application of this science, and learning & career
opportunities. This is aimed at students studying A or AS level
Biology or Physical Exercise and is curriculum related. |
Forensic
Science workshop
This workshop is a full day of practical sessions and lectures,
carrying out forensic analytical techniques to solve a crime,
investigating counterfeit foodstuff goods, and tracking down
illegal imports of plants and other biological materials. We
will also look at the wider applications of this science and
learning & career opportunities. This is aimed at A or
AS level students and is curriculum related. |
Visits
to Sites of Historic Scientific Interest
The Cheshire and Warrington area is the home of many successful
applications of scientific principles. There are many historical
sites remaining that remind us of the important advances in
industrial technology. These sites all have their place in
scientific history, and students will learn the history as
well as the scientific principles as they tour the sites. |
Industry
visits
The Cheshire & Warrington area houses a diverse range of
industries, applying scientific principles in the design, manufacture
and delivery of their products. Tours are available round sites
representing the food & drinks industry, textiles, chemicals,
engineering, pharmaceuticals and others. These tours will provide
opportunities for learning about scientific principles and
their application, and also an awareness of careers in such
industries.
|
Science
Fun Days
An event comprising hands on activities, where young people
can explore scientific principles, see how they are used
in industrial applications, and investigate further learning
and careers in those industries. The activities are run as
a quiz; students (in teams of 4) compete in a variety of
scientific tasks to win points. There will be a prize and
trophy presented to the winning team, and also a donation
of £250 to the winning school, for Science resources.
(Information, advice and guidance on careers and learning
will also be available).
Sutton High School, Ellesmere Port
– 24th March
Birchwood Community High School, Warrington – 30th
March
St.
Nicholas Catholic High School, Hartford – 21st April
|
Rubbish Rocket Competition
Students build their own rockets out of used materials; lemonade
bottles, cardboard and plastic, and design them to travel as
far as possible. Air pressure and water propelled, these rockets
are fun and very effective (travelling as much as 800 ft up
into the air)! The activity develops “design and make” skills
of younger pupils, while older ones can employ scientific principles
to optimise their rocket design. Schools then enter their best
rockets in heats to compete across the county. There will be
a prize and trophy presented to the winning team, and also
a donation of £250 to the winning school, for Science
or Design & Technology resources. |
Science Celebrities
TV Vet Steve Leonard will be giving a talk about veterinary
practice, Chester Town Hall 16th March 2004, suitable for
a family audience. Originally appearing in the hugely successful “Vets
School” and “Vets in Practice”, more recently

will be giving a talk, at a Chester school venue, and will
be open to children from local schools and their families.
The school will also be hosting a Horrible Books book fair,
run by the school children and proceeds will be used for
school science resources.
“Meet Sir Isaac Newton” (a one-man show conceived,
written and directed by Johnny Ball) will be hosted at schools
in Ellesmere Port and Neston during Science Week. This is
a fast-moving, hilarious yet hugely informative show, performed
by David Hall (English Shakespeare Company) for audiences
of 8 years and upwards.
Aubrey Manning will be giving a talk on science and applications
in the geological field. Professor Aubrey Manning has presented
the BBC series “Unearthing Mysteries” and most
recently “Talking Landscapes”. This will be held
at University College Chester on the 10th March 2004.
|
Bridge Building Competition
Children are encouraged to design and make their own bridges, to a supplied specification and using only recycled materials. These will then be tested and judged in local competition heats, and the winners go through to a grand finale. There will be a trophy presented to the winning team, and also a donation of £250 to the winning school, for Science or Design & Technology resources.
